EUROMAN Aimed At Growth Markets

New heatset web press from manroland Rarely before has there been so much movement in the creative world of print media as there is today. The dividing lines between different types of products are blurring more and more, and a dynamically growing market segment is emerging. manroland has responded to this by developing an appropriate production tool: the new heatset EUROMAN web offset press.

The EUROMAN is a 32-page heatset web offset press with a web width of 965 millimetres. At its maximum speed of 35,000 cylinder rph it can produce up to 70,000 copies per hour in double production with two quarter-folds. It is driven by shaftless AC motor technology. To meet the growing demands for high print quality, the printing units are equipped with segmented ink blades, three plate inking rollers, and three temperature-controlled ink distributor rollers for constant ink viscosity and uniform ink density.

The Potential Market for EUROMAN For some time now print products like advertising supplements and telephone directories, as well as standard-quality commercial jobs, have been enjoying above-average growth rates. They require different production parameters to those that have traditionally been available. A printing company’s success depends on the economy and flexibility of the production line.

A close look at the diversity of these print products shows why they are becoming increasingly popular:
  • Because of their high advertising efficiency, especially for regional target groups, advertising flyers as inserts or direct-mail shots are growing strongly – above all in Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America at the present time.
  • Despite a wealth of online information, directories in general and telephone directories in particular, along with their “Yellow Pages”, remain print products in great demand. They offer outstanding possibilities for local advertising aimed at medium-sized companies in the target area. The increasing use of high-quality four-colour printing is making them even more attractive.
  • New titles and new types of product in publications and commercial printing are increasing reader loyalty. More and more highly topical magazine products are being provided as newspaper inserts – aimed at highly differentiated target groups.

Commenting on the introduction of EUROMAN, John Ellis, Sales Director for Web Products at manroland GB, said: “The press construction is based on the I-type standing unit, similar to that used on the UNISET newspaper press. The EUROMAN will be equipped with many high specification features, such as closed-loop controls, precision commercial folding options, and commercial inking train, as well, of course, as a high specification drying unit. One might envisage a four-unit version of this machine being the typical configuration.

“Press development has been focused on particular market segments, and the product will be priced accordingly. Whilst we are still in the process of finalising a list price for this machine, it is likely that it will be extremely competitive, somewhere below the investment cost of our LITHOMAN press.

“Development of the press has also been undertaken with certain world markets in mind – providing manroland with a product to fit a specific need. It is certainly likely that this product will fill a specific requirement for UK-based printers.”

EUROMAN premiere in Brazil and the United States Print products destined for the EUROMAN are highly topical and have a relatively short life, meaning that the demands on attractiveness and target group precision continue to grow. manroland’s new EUROMAN series is the logical response to the production requirements of this segment.

The press premiered at Ediouro Grafica e Editora S.A. in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the end of April 2007. Its special strengths come from the high degree of flexibility for a wide scope of applications. These range from all types of directories through books and textbooks right up to advertising supplements and magazines for the Brazilian market.

The second EUROMAN is going to the United States and is scheduled to start up at Hi-Liter Inland Graphics in Burlington, Wisconsin, in late Autumn 2007. Company founder Craig C. Faust expects the new heatset web press to considerably broaden his product portfolio and “bring new impetus to our marketing, gain us new customers, and increase our efficiency in both sales and production.”

Fully networked with printnet The EUROMAN is of course also integrated in the modern print process philosophy with the manroland printnet technology which extends from production control and control console technique right through to production management.

A press concept customized to suit each company’s job profile Depending on their job structures, printing companies can choose between two damping systems: contact-free spray dampers or continuous feed dampers. Even greater efficiency with industrial-scale production can be provided by automation options such as inking unit presetting or the well-proven PowerPlateLoading system for automated plate changing. Highly dependable webbing-up is ensured by the chain-driven webbing-up device – with a speed of 50 metres per minute this is presently the fastest system on the market. manroland’s extensive range of folders permits customer-specific solutions for many different types of folds.
