More Schur Mailroom for Newbury

Independent newspaper producer the Newbury Weekly News Group has announced details regarding an order for new Schur mailroom equipment, including a third stacker, an in-line strapper, an under-wrapper and a new copy conveyor, including dumpgate, within its mailroom facility.

ImageSchur, the Danish supplier of mailroom equipment and distributed in the UK by manroland GB, first sold its products to the Berkshire -based publisher and contract printer in 1988. This equipment was replaced in 2005 with the purchase of two pick-up stations, an A855 inserter, an A600 stacker and packing line, with further equipment added in 2007.

The latest stacker for Newbury is the Schur K Stacker, a modular, reliable and hard-working stacker with high capacity for the stacking of newspapers, weeklies, maga-zines, bro¬¬chures and similar prod¬ucts. Avail¬able with single-copy production, or stream production, the K Stacker is a highly flexible machine. Accu¬rate, effi¬cient and very straightforward in operation, it is easily integrated into any exist¬ing pro-duction line. It joins two A600 Schur Stackers at Newbury. The UP660E Under-Wrapper is a high-speed, reliable product designed for long, trouble-free operation. The UP660E is robust in design, easy to operate, with a minimum of moving parts and a capacity to handle up to 35 bundles per minute.

Commenting on the latest additions to the mailroom, operations director at Newbury, Paul Jordan, said: “Having recently announced details of our investment plans with regard to our printing capabilities, we needed further to expand our mailroom to cope with the additional throughput.”

ImageThe Newbury Weekly News Group print room runs 24-hour shifts from Tuesday through to Friday, and a day shift on Monday. The site produces its own Newbury Weekly News (28,000 print run) and provides a contract print service for a wide range of other titles, including Daltons Weekly (60,000+), Isle of Wight County Press (43,000), Maidenhead Advertiser, Henley Standard, Newquay Voice, Thameside & Glossop Reporter, Chinese Times, International Extra and Philippines Express.

“We are a family-owned and independent newspaper producer and very proud of that fact,” said Adrian Martin, managing director of the Newbury Weekly News Group. “We are also delighted to be able to provide a printing service for a significant number of other independent titles. Our speciality is high pagination, short print run publications.

“With regard to this latest mailroom equipment order, we certainly had no hesitation in going back to Schur for this extension to our existing system. Schur equipment is very solid and of excellent quality – you could say it's even over engineered.”

Commenting on the order on behalf of manroland GB, Andrew Latham, newspaper product sales manager, added: “Naturally we are delighted to be able to extend the Schur system here at the Newbury Weekly News Group. This site illustrates every day how flexible and robust Schur mailroom equipment is, and what the products are capable of producing.”
