Mortons Sign Off on Second Web Press Folder

ImageMortons Print Ltd Managing Director Ian Fisher visited Drupa to sign off on the completion of the installation of a second folder for the company’s manroland UNISET 75 web press, as well as seeing the latest developments at manroland and other suppliers.

The initial order for this unit was placed at Newstec, Brighton in June 2007, and was part of a £3 million investment at the Horncastle, Lincolnshire company.

“This additional equipment allows us to maximise utilisation of our existing printing towers,” said Ian Fisher. “It gives us a greater flexibility and also provides us with resilience. We are delighted to be able to sign off on the installation of this unit, and it was especially pleasing that everything went according to our schedule. Manroland installed the unit on time, and worked hard to ensure that it performed exactly as required.”

The company's manroland UNISET 75 web press has the ability to print up to 96-pages in full colour, with a maximum output speed of 75,000 copies per hour. The press was installed in early 2006. “This expansion allows us to run two different jobs at the same time on our existing press configuration, meaning that we are able to make best use of all available towers,” said Ian Fisher. “Whilst some jobs take all six towers, others do not. The second folder allows us to maximise our available print time, and effectively gives us a second press.”

Ian Fisher was also keen to examine the benefits of manroland's latest Automatic Plate Loading system for web presses while at the Drupa show. His visit included visits to the Ferag stand and a tour of the digital equipment providers.

Mortons of Horncastle employs some 200-plus personnel, and has always been at the vanguard of production techniques. Back in 1968 it became the first newspaper company in Lincolnshire to switch to printing web-offset from letterpress.
