First Class Printing with printcom Products

For stable print production the perfect interplay of all system components is crucial. For this reason manroland’s printcom range contains exactly the right product for every print situation. The knowledge behind the printcom range is based on a wealth of experience, painstaking tests and purposeful research. The “printcom Seal of Quality” is only given to a product if it fulfills the rigorous manroland criteria.

ImageFor more than 15 years now manroland has been supplying its customers with high-quality, process-compliant products via printcom, one of the four sectors of the PRINTVALUE portfolio. The products are compatible with printing systems from a wide range of press manufacturers and can be relied on for optimum running of the machine. To put it another way, they prevent impairment of the printing process or, even worse, damage to any machine parts. But what makes printcom products special and not merely exchangeable?

Only the best for coveted seal
Firstly, a number of well-known manufacturers can be chosen from for each prod-uct group. Only the very best brands are tested, and these are products that have already been checked for their material compatibility by FOGRA or other leading official testing authorities. Manufacturers must satisfy an extensive catalog of criteria: What can the product do? How reliably can it be supplied? How fast does the manufacturer react in cases of urgently needed service? Can the manufacturer provide the quantities required? How intensively is the product further developed? If these initial hurdles are cleared, an intensive testing phase follows. Whether blankets, dampening additives, washing agents, coatings or silicones – in the la-boratories and test areas of manroland research and development they have to show how they perform under different mechanical, dynamic and chemical condi-tions.

Some 100 staff – chemists, physicists, engineers, printing engineers, mechatron-ics and electricians – provide the professional and process-specific knowledge re-quired for the test procedures. Experienced printing instructors contribute their multifarious expertise gained in practical work worldwide. In an area of about 8,000 square meters in Augsburg and Offenbach, the experts can make use of measur-ing and testing equipment plus virtually all types of manroland presses. Only in this way is it possible to achieve interpretable product comparisons specific to various conditions and production methods. At the end of all of the tests a maximum of five manufacturers will qualify as best-in-class partners per product group.

The manufacturers are closely involved in the comprehensive function tests. If ne-cessary, they optimize parameters, or develop completely new products. Even though they remain anonymous, the printcom Seal of Quality is very much sought-after by them. They profit from the joint research work, the findings of which they can apply to their other products. At the same time, they obtain access to the worldwide manroland sales network.

Clear recommendations
With all test runs completed, there are clear product recommendations for every press and every application. To some extent, this information varies due to regio-nally and nationally different production methods. The goal is always to offer two to three alternatives per product group so that customers aren’t dependent on just one manufacturer. Once included in the range, printcom products continue to be observed. Feedback from customers, reports by printing instructors and service staff together with the long-term internal use in the manroland Training Center and Print Technology Center leaves no quality fluctuation undiscovered. If the manufacturer cannot remedy the defects in reasonable time, the product is stripped of its quality seal.

Ideally, presses operate from day-one with optimally process-compliant system components from printcom. Therefore, complementing the initial equipment pur-chase, manroland also offers start-up packages. These comprehensive packs usually comprise of some 40 or so products covering both the pressroom and prepress. They include volume products like dampening solution additives and washing agents through to rubber gloves and washing sponges. About 80 percent of users continue with printcom products.
