ROLAND 500 for The Print Room, Liverpool

ImageEx-Insurance Inplant Expands with New Press and Premises The Print Room, Liverpool, has announced that it has ordered a ROLAND 500 five-colour plus coater press to install at its new premises in March of this year.

The new machine will replace the company's existing ROLAND 305 machine as the three-year-old operation looks to further improve its efficiency and turnaround times.

"We have been manroland users for over 20 years," said director Dave Mann. "Of course we had to look at other manufacturers products as well, but saw absolutely no reason to move away from manroland. The presses have always provided us with excellent print quality, and the technology on the latest models is, we believe, ahead of the rest."

The Print Room was formerly the in-house print department for the Swiss Life Insurance Company. Swiss Life announced some years ago that it would be moving away from its Liverpool headquarters, and a decision was taken to allow the print department to create its own stand-alone business. Four directors took a business that was producing £400,000 of non-Swiss Life work, and turned it into a £1 million turnover printing company within three years.

"We were able to stay in the same premises for our first three years," said Dave Mann. "But now the time has come for us to move and find our own facilities. We will take on the new offices very shortly and install the ROLAND 500 while we are still running the 305, so it should be a smooth transition to both new premises and a new press."

"The new press will still provide for B2 five-colour printing, but we will also have a dedicated coater on the machine. This gives us much more flexibility with regard to the coating that we use. We often used the five units on the 305 for four-colours and a seal, but having a dedicated coater gives us many more options. The ROLAND 500 will also give us the very latest technology for ensuring faster make-readies - which is something that every printer is striving for at the moment.

"With all the issues on global warming within our environment, we have opted to run alcohol free from the outset, accompanied with the use of vegetable based inks. We believe that in choosing this option our customers can be assured that we are making every effort to become a greener company."

The new press is configured to handle substrates up to 1mm in thickness. "We don't actually have a lot of call for heavier substrates at the moment, but by added that feature we may well be able to open new doors and handle new work," said Dave Mann.

The ROLAND 500 will be equipped with manroland's ColorPilot system for managing colour on the run. ColorPilot measures a complete print control strip from the printed sheet, attends to automatic calibration, and displays any deviations on the screen, all in less than 14 seconds. Correction of the ink slide positions takes just another four seconds because all of the printing units are regulated simultaneously.

"ColorPilot will mean that we can get into accurate colour quickly, and maintain consistent colour throughout the run - and that is consistency based on accurate readings, rather than being reliant on the eye of the operator," concluded Dave Mann.
