Warners Moves Up to 32-page Web
LITHOMAN Press Installed at Bourne Warners Midlands plc has announced the installation of a four-unit 32pp manroland LITHOMAN press at its Bourne, Lincolnshire site. The press has been installed in a purpose built factory extension, which, including associated pre-press and finishing equipment, required a record investment by the company of £10 million.
The installation also represented a significant landmark for manroland GB, as this was the 50th consecutive UK commercial web press installation that had been completed either on time or early.
Warners specialise in the production of fast turnaround, short-run specialist magazines and periodicals, with an average run-length at the plant of just 15,000 copies. Other web presses at the plant include Heidelberg M600 and Komori 16 page web presses. "The move to a 32-page machine provides us with even higher productivity with reduced costs," said Managing Director Philip Warner.
“We expect to announce a record turnover for the business this year, which continues a trend of good results. This can only be achieved, however, by investing in the right equipment. We looked at a number of alternatives before deciding on the LITHOMAN machine. manroland was able to provide us with the specific configuration that suited our needs, and was also able to guarantee certain levels of performance with regard to printing capabilities of the press. Having reviewed a similar machine installed in Salt Lake City we were convinced that this was the right solution for our business,” said Philip Warner.
“Because of the run-lengths involved - some as low as 4,000 copies - speed of make-ready was the critical factor, rather than actual running speed of the press. The LITHOMAN was definitely competitive on pages per hour, but the ability to switch from job to job in short time was certainly very impressive,” added Mr Warner.

The four-unit press is configured to run a 965mm web width with a 630mm cut-off, which is able to accommodate a number of "oversize" magazines produced at Warners. The machine is equipped with a 2:3:3 folder; QuadTech on-press controls, matching other machines at the factory; OxyDry blanket wash system; and MEGTEC reel stands and drying unit.
The machine was signed off by Warners on March 1st, 2007. "I am very satisfied with the choice we have made,” said Philip Warner. "The installation was smooth and on-schedule; our operators like the machine; and the performance of the press has been beyond our expectations." The LITHOMAN is now running 24-hour five-day weeks.
Commenting on the installation for manroland, John Ellis, Director of Web Sales, said, "We are delighted to partner Warners Midlands Plc during this exciting phase of their growth. Warners specified a press to achieve the maximum throughput of jobs, very fast turnaround and the shortest of run lengths. Warners are experts at this relatively unique use of web presses and are proving that the LITHOMAN is also ideal for this market sector. The press can also produce longer run work efficiently: when producing 16pp products the press can top 65,000 copies per hour. It is the best of both worlds.”
Warners celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. Warners has come a long way since its beginnings as a small company specialising in newspaper distribution.
Today, the print business occupies a site covering over 100,000 sq ft with over 300 employees, and a turnover in the region of £32 million. It boasts a comprehensive range of printing machinery, incorporating the very latest technology, and has built up a wealth of expertise in handling print and publishing jobs of all sizes, from reprographics through to distribution and mailing.
Warners Group Publications plc is a separate business run by Philip's brother, Stephen Warner. It employs a further 185 people, and has a turnover in the region of £20 million. Some 5% of the print company's business is provided by the publishing operation.
