ROLAND InlineSheeter

Printing from reels on sheetfed presses The ROLAND InlineSheeter for the ROLAND 700 and ROLAND 900 in format 6 simplifies processing of high-grade substrates like metallized papers or foils because it minimizes infeed problems. And besides that the InlineSheeter also has advantages with standard papers provided that the price difference between reel paper and sheeted paper is big enough.

Reels loaded quickly and safely Reels up to 1800 mm in diameter can be unwound from the reelstand. The standard reelstand position is at the operating side of the press in a frame mounted on rails recessed in the floor which enables reels to be loaded comfortably, quickly and safely.

Freely configurable reelstand frame position For flexible integration of the ROLAND InlineSheeter in the pressroom and to ensure optimal utilization of the space available in each specific case, the reelstand can also be positioned at the drive side of the press or in front of the feeder.

ImageAbsolutely clean cut Automatically tensioned, the web runs from the reelstand to the cross-cutter which, when used with the ROLAND 700, processes substrates from 40 – 350 g/m2. The scissor-cut system assures an absolutely clean cut, and the cut-off length, steplessly adjustable between 450 and 740 cm, is conveniently set at the display. The cross-cutter is also equipped with an adjustment facility to ensure that the sheets are cut at a precise right-angle to the reel edge. Because the sheets are cut from a reel they tend to curl and so an integrated sheet decurler is provided, especially important as operation gets closer to the reel core.

Simple changeover to printing from stacks Changeover from reel processing mode to stack processing mode or vice versa is fast and easy. When stacks are to be run, the reelstand and crosscutter can be moved to park positions thus providing unrestricted access to the feeder.

Even in reel printing mode the paper stack can be left in the feeder. An additional bridge is provided between the reelstand and cross-cutter which permits the operator to move conveniently to the drive side of the press without having to walk right around it.

Anti-static equipment for difficult substrates Optional anti-static equipment upstream of the cross-cutter improves the runability of electrostatically charged substrates, and an optional web moistening unit improves sheet handling in the postpress operations.

Corona charging unit for foils An optional corona charging unit is recommended for printing foils which greatly improves ink trapping on the foil surface. This is only needed when the ROLAND InlineSheeter is in use and is located immediately after the reelstand so that before the foil is sheeted it can be pre-treated over the full surface and on both sides. This ensures that the ink bonds well to the foil surface.

Real cost advantages The ROLAND InlineSheeter can provide commercial printing plants with very significant economic advantages. Here is an economic model for a commercial printer based on the following parameters:
  • Perfecting with an average run length of 10000 copies of 70 x 100 cm sheets using 120 g/m2 paper.
  • Reel material is used more than 75% of the time.

Result: Reel paper is £15 per 100 kg less expensive than sheeted paper. Because there are only a few sheets in the feeder at any time, there are less feeder stops which increases the average production speed.

This economic model shows that it is possible to reduce substrate costs by almost £200,000 per annum in two-shift operation. And the additional production capacity gained by higher net output is another plus factor which means that it is possible for the investment to be amortized within two to three years. After eight years, the ROLAND InlineSheeter can provide an additional pre-tax profit of more than £1 million. The picture looks even better with a three-shift operation.

Great advantages for publications and label printing as well Publications printers can also use the ROLAND InlineSheeter to lower the production costs of books and magazines. And the InlineSheeter is an interesting alternative for label printers as well because the thin papers they generally use can be printed at a higher speed from reels than they can be from sheets.
